Vampire Baby is a full color picture book. An older unnamed brother tells the story of his baby sister, Tootie, who used to be a regular baby. Then she suddenly sprouts fangs and begins to bite everything. The doctor is unworried, but the brother knows that Tootie has become a vampire. He tries to warn his parents. When they refuse to believe him. the brother tries to find proof. He points out that Tootie eats only red foods, representing the mandatory blood that all vampire stories need. She wakes him up in the middle of the night, but his mother refuses see it as proof of Tootie being a vampire. She says that his sister is hungry and makes the brother take off his vampire necklace.

The brother loses patience, and during a trip to the store, he tries to get rid of her. He dresses her in a vampire cape and gives her a sign that reads “Wanted good home for Vampire Baby”. When a vampire family comes and is interested in taking Tootie home with them, she responds by biting the vampire child. It is at this point that the brother realizes that he doesn’t want to be rid of his vampire baby, and, as with any good picture book, it all ends happily.

Because this is a picture book, the illustrations extend the story. Tootie has a widow’s peak. Bats aren’t mentioned in the text, but they are prominent in the illustrations. The brother shows his mother a picture of the stereotypical vampire with fangs covered in blood. The vampire family in the store are wearing capes and bat accessories, and sport widow’s peaks.
